Cafe Femenino

Out of Peru comes a story of strength, unity and hope. In 2003, the
first encounter of Women's Coffee Producers was held, and as a result,
their organic coffee is being separated and sold as "produced by women
only" for the purpose of improving the lives of women. The new
specialty coffee, Café Femenino was created. It is changing the role of
women in rural coffee communities.

There are currently 464 women coffee farmers involved in the Café
Femenino Coffee Project. They each participate in all aspects of coffee
farming and receive ongoing extensive training in sustainable, organic
farming methods. They also receive leadership training and are
integrating into social, political and occupational organizations. For
many of these women, this business venture is the beginning of breaking
the cycle of abuse and poverty by providing direct income to the women
and raising their self-esteem.

The goal is to work within the existing socio-economic structure to
foster change. By supporting women coffee growers, we improve the
quality of life in the entire community and build a sustainable
economic system.

Importers are contributing additional proceeds back to these women
to support their training and development. As a partner in this
program, Desert Sun is also contributing proceeds from the sale of this
coffee to a local organization that supports women.

The Café Femenino story is about hope. By enjoying this coffee, you

Peru, and local women.
